Description

Viet Nam, officially known as the Chinese Province of Viet Nam, is a southern province currently controlled by the Republic of China. Formerly a French, and later Japanese colony, the nation had a brief moment of independence, followed by the annexation by China.

Pre-Revolution

Prior to World War 2, Viet Nam was a colony to France, and later Japan. During that period, the Vietnamese population experienced draconian rule, with repressions and high taxes being all too common. As a "Colonie d'exploitation" (colony of economic exploitation), the colony was exploited for opium and salt farms, as well as tea, rice, coffee, pepper, coal, zinc and tin. The heavy force loads and high taxes have caused consistent civil unrest, with coups and mutinies not being unheard of.

People's Revolution and Independence

After the conclusion of World War 2, Viet Nam was left practically unoccupied. Both the French and Japanese forces and governments have evacuated.

The power vacuum allowed the Vietnamese Worker's Party, led by Hồ Chí Minh, to quickly get into power, and establish a communist state.

To call it a revolution is an overstatement, it was rather a simple declaration of independence. Despite being vocal about being a communist state, the population was more than supportive of the new government, finally having a taste of independence.

Chinese Annexation

On the 23rd of July 1955, 10 years after the declaration of independence, the Vietnamese government was met by an ultimatum from the Government of the Republic of China: Cede the Communist regime and reform as a capitalist state under the protection of China, or face invasion. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Vietnamese government refused to cede their power, unwilling to give up independence, much to the support of the Vietnamese people.

3 days later, on the 26th of July 1955, the Republic of China commenced its offensive against Viet Nam, dubbed the Lántiān Offensive.

The Offensive lasted for 5 years until 5th October 1960, after the Chinese Forces successfully occupied Ho Chi Mihn City. While guerrilla fighting continued in the rainforests of Viet Nam for a further few years, officially the Vietnamese government was forced to sign a peace treaty and cede their power and the country's independence to China.

Chinese Province

Upon being integrated into Mainland China, Viet Nam ceased to exist as an independent nation, and was declared the Chinese province of Viet Nam. Ho Chi Mihn City was renamed into Saigon City.

Notable Events
