Description
The Berlin Wall is a concrete barrier that physically divided Berlin since 1961. Construction of the wall was commenced by the DDR (East Germany) on 13 August 1961. The Wall cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany, including East Berlin, and additional, yet impractical construction was built upon in 1980, when it became defunct. The wall also ideologically divided Berlin to prevent subversive action to be undertaken to the USSR. Today, the Berlin Wall stands as more or less a symbolic international attraction Germany and East Germany both benefit from by the tourist trade.
